Chat with your transcripts and meeting notes in plain language. Ask questions, get summaries, pull action items and quotes, and search across your files.

Written by Simon

HappyScribe's AI Chat lets you have a conversation with your transcripts and meeting notes. Ask a question, get a summary, pull out action items or quotes, and search across your files, all in plain language.

This article covers where to find AI Chat, how to start your first chat, what you can ask, and how it works with meetings recorded by the Notetaker.

Where to find AI Chat

You can open AI Chat from three places, depending on what you're working on:

  • From the sidebar: click the Chat button to start a new chat or reopen a past one. Your previous chats are listed on the side, like in ChatGPT or Claude.

  • From your HappyScribe dashboard: use the chat box at the bottom of the screen, labeled as Ask anything, to ask a question or attach a file without opening the editor first.

  • Inside a file: open a transcript or meeting in the editor and use the chat panel to ask about that specific file.

Starting your first chat

Step 1: Open AI Chat

Click the Chat button from the sidebar, or open a file and use its chat panel.

Step 2: Choose what to chat about

You can point the chat at a single file or at a whole folder. Chatting with a folder lets you ask questions across every file inside it, which is useful when you want to compare meetings or find something across a series.

Step 3: Type your question or pick a quick action

Type a question in your own words, or use one of the quick actions to get started. You'll see the response stream in as it's written.

What you can ask AI Chat

Every HappyScribe AI Chat has an open input, so you can ask anything about your file. To get going quickly, use one of the built-in quick actions:

  • Speaker names: fill speaker names in one click.

  • Extract quotes: retrieve the key quotes, with timestamps.

  • Draft a follow-up email: get a draft complete with subject line, recap, and action items.

  • Ask anything: type your own question in plain language.

Some example questions to try:

  • "Summarize this meeting in five bullet points."

  • "What did we decide about pricing?"

  • "List every action item and who is responsible."

  • "Find the part where the client talks about the deadline."

šŸ’” Responses come back in the language of your transcript for the quick actions, and in the language you wrote your question for everything else.

Using AI Chat with your meetings

If you use the HappyScribe Notetaker to record and transcribe your calls, AI Chat works on those meeting notes too. Once a meeting has been transcribed, open it and start a chat to:

  • Get a recap of what was said and decided.

  • Pull out action items and follow-ups.

  • Ask what a specific person said, or what was agreed on a topic.

Because HappyScribe builds a knowledge graph of the people and companies mentioned across your transcripts, you can also ask questions that span several meetings, for example "What has this client asked for across all our calls?"

Attaching files and pasting links

From the dashboard chat box you can attach a file to ask about it directly. You can also paste a HappyScribe transcription link into the chat, and the AI will read that file for you.

To transcribe a new audio or video file, use + New rather than attaching it to the chat. AI Chat works with transcripts and documents, not with raw audio or video.

Choosing an AI model

You can pick which AI model answers your questions using the model selector in the chat input. Auto (marked with a sparkle) chooses a suitable model for you and is the best default. More capable models are available on paid plans.

Plans and limits

AI Chat is available on every plan, including Free. Paid plans get higher limits and access to more capable models.

  • Free: Analyze 3 files/month with AI Chat

  • Paid plans with access to more capable models:

    • Basic: analyze 10 files/month

    • Pro & Business: unlimited AI Chat

Troubleshooting

The chat says it can't open my file

Make sure the file has finished transcribing before you chat with it. If you pasted a link, check that it's a HappyScribe transcription link and that the file belongs to your account.

I attached an audio or video file and it didn't work

AI Chat reads transcripts and documents, not raw media. Transcribe the recording first using + New, then chat with the transcript.

The response came back in the wrong language

Quick actions answer in your transcript's language, and open questions answer in the language you wrote them in. If you want a different language, ask for it directly, for example "Answer in Portuguese."
